Regional Project activity in Austria

In July 2009, 18 players from 6 different nations took part in the U15 training week in Pressbaum, Austria following a U15 tournament the weekend before. A very interesting team of experienced and young coaches worked very hard with the junior players. The activity was supported by Badminton Europe through its Regional Projects programme.

Members of the coaching team were

  • Verena Fastenbauer (AUT), head coach
  • Surinder Mahajan (IND), national coach of India
  • Roland Brunner (ITA)
  • Andrea Zvorc (CRO)
  • Richard Purser (NZL)
  • Roman Zirnwald (AUT)
  • Daniel Graßmück (AUT)
In addition Milan Ludik (CZE) and Ralph Bittenauer (AUT) 2 very talented young players were available as sparring partners. The players came from Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Italy and Switzerland.

Head coach Verena Fastenbauer worked individual training concepts for each player that were implemented with the help of the coaches and the sparring partners. Especially the work with Surinder Mahajan, one of the fathers of the Indian “Badminton miracle”, was very interesting for the juniors, since he introduced methods like yoga that were completely new to the players. The other coaches were in particular impressed by the speed and precision of Surinder’s multi shuttle feeding.

In addition the juniors had the opportunity to play with top players, like Roman Zirnwald and Daniel Graßmück, # 74 in the world doubles ranking and #10 in the European Badminton Circuit or Andrea Zvorc, # 20 in the European Badminton Circuit.

Besides much of serious work, a number of social activities were organized for the players, like a visit of Vienna’s famous “Prater”-amusement park and a barbecue in the swimming bath of Pressbaum.

The very intensive camp week was terminated with a small individual tournament, where the young players could test their new skills.

Badminton Europe would like to congratulate ASV Pressbaum Badminton for organising this activity.
