Three times a charm

Usually one would use this expression when someone has failed something twice, but for the BEC Summer School this is not the case. It is the 2nd time in a row that Podčetrtek, Slovenia, is hosting the Summer School, and like the previous years - with success. Podčetrtek is not the only repeater; many staff coaches, coaches and players were here last year as well.

Player, Mari Ann Karjus (Estonia) shares why: “I came back to this camp because it was so much fun last year, and, hopefully, it will be just as fun this year. This camp is so special because there is a lot of new faces and (this year) I have more skills, more power. I hope to improve it and go back to Estonia as a stronger player.”

“It is a great experience to meet different coaches with higher level and it is a good place here in Slovenia. And another reason why I came back is to meet players from other countries.” Says Vojtech Sebera, player from Czech Republic.

Players played and teachers learned
During the morning session on the second day, the players were divided into two groups; one group, respectively, on court training with some staff coaches, while the other was practicing their balance with Mike (Staff coach) off court. The main goal for the day was to figure out the level of the players.
In the afternoon, the staff coaches led different kinds of training still aiming to figure out the level, while another group had a more relaxing time playing football and volleyball.

The ‘entertainment’ of the evening was led by staff coach, Jakob, which consisted in a tournament of the card game Uno combined with badminton.
For the coaches, the second day of the Summer School was all about Shuttle Time. They got introduced to the Shuttle Time-resources and delivered 3 different tasks during the day. Jeroen van Dijk was leading the course and was assisted by Helen Ward.

Staff coach, Fran Dacal (ESP), explains why BEC Summer School is so unique:
“One of the big differences here is that we don’t know the players in advance, so that mean that here it’s more about giving the players some inspiration that they can bring with them back home.”

We are proud to host repeaters and newcomers, and appreciate the great feedback we receive every year! We need both to keep up the high level of training and keep evolving and exploring ways to improve.
